Holly Menard, owner of Sunrise Massage and Bodywork, comes from a long line of doctors and nurses. During her nursing career, she worked, as an RN, on a cancer research unit at Duke Hospital. Like many of us, she has family members who died from cancer.
Holly has a BS in Nursing and is a licensed Nationally Certified massage therapist, whose specialty is working with cancer patients. She also provides therapeutic massage for a variety of conditions causing pain and decreased mobility.
There are many reasons for cancer patients to receive a massage with a properly trained therapist on a regular basis.
Massage can:
- Reduce anxiety
- Relieve depression
- Enhance body image
- Ease treatment-related side effects such as nausea, vomiting, pain, peripheral neuropathy, and lymphedema
- Improve sleep and relaxation
- Support a healthier immune system
- Improve quality of life and well-being
“I always wanted to be in service to people. My passion is to help people, to ease their dis-ease. My journey started with a Reiki class that was offered by somebody at my church. Then I decided to go to massage school, so that I could do both,” – said Holly.
“I have been practicing for over 15 years and treated thousands of people. For about 3 years I have experienced joy providing compassionate touch for cancer patients. I’ve learned to be very careful and observant to determine how I may best serve my clients.” At times the lightest touch is most effective and manipulating the muscle tissue can actually do harm.
Massage is not just a session. It is a whole experience at Sunrise Massage starting from a magical touch of Holly’s hands to a softly lit room and from the sound of fountain to a gentle smell of essential oils.
“In an ideal world a patient would receive a massage session once a week. Our magnificent brain is capable of holding onto to a pleasant experience and when reminded can re-call it again and again. Frequent massage makes it easier to consciously re-create the pleasant feeling, and allow for the release everyday stress.” – suggested Holly.
Because the internal home environment is toxic and can further compromise cancer patient’s immune system, Holly found a reputable company that manufactures very effective environmentally friendly, safe, non-toxic household cleaners: Shaklee. She recommends Shaklee to help her clients to create a safer home environment.
Holly volunteers at a Cancer treatment center once a month. She offers hand, foot and chair massage sessions to patients and their caregivers, which includes the staff.
She also offers sessions at a reduced rate once a month at Cornucopia House in Chapel Hill.
The intention in her work is to provide “compassionate touch to ease the journey”.
