It is also the site for a condition called colitis, the medical term for inflammation of the colon.

The colon itself—medically, the large intestine—is about six feet long and two inches in diameter. It completes the digestive process by absorbing minerals, nutrients, and excess water from the digestive residue of the food we have eaten and discharging toxins and waste materials from the body.

Notes Ms. Holloway who, in 2009, was named Colon Therapist of the Year by the International Association of Colon Hydrotherapists, “We treat many clients who are undergoing treatment for cancer, and we see many clients who have been diagnosed with colitis.

“The classic symptoms of colitis are alternating constipation and diarrhea, with mucous and gaseous bloating—clear evidence that the gastrointestinal system is out of balance. Patients with colitis are more difficult to treat because the condition manifests with great variety.

“With virtually all of our clients, we look first and foremost at diet, but in truth, the dietary approach that works extremely well in one patient with colitis may simply not work well for another. We look at live whole foods, herbs, and foods that are going to coat the colon as we work to quiet everything down. Our goal is to reduce the inflammation, and then give support to the internal healing process.”

At the Alternative Health Center of Cary, she says, “We work with cancer clients on many levels and in many ways, depending on their needs. Some clients choose alternative approaches to dealing with cancer, such as adopting an organic diet, juicing, and colon cleansing. Others choose traditional therapies in tandem with colon therapy. Chemotherapy is a chemical with many side effects, because it introduces poison into the body. Colon hydrotherapy, when administered at the right time and in the right way during the cancer treatment process, can help cancer patients remove toxins that build up in the colon. Colon hydrotherapy is really a blessing for patients with cancer.

“Perhaps even more important, colon hydrotherapy is a simple, inexpensive, and remarkably effective way to prevent a host of disease conditions, including colitis and cancer. It is a safe, effective method of cleansing the colon of waste material by repeated, gentle flushing with water.

“When the colon is congested with stagnant wastes, toxins can back up into the system and pollute the inner environment. These poisons can re-enter and circulate in the bloodstream making us feel ill, tired, or weak. Impacted materials impair the colon’s ability to assimilate minerals and vitamins. And a buildup of material on the colon wall can inhibit muscular action causing sluggish bowel movements and constipation.”

During a colonic, she explains, toxic material is broken down and gently flushed away so it can no longer harm the body or inhibit assimilation and elimination. “Through massage, the skilled colon therapist is able to work loose and eliminate toxic waste. When the colon is cleansed and healed, the wellness of the whole body is greatly enhanced,” she explains.

“I know from nearly 30 years of experience that a client’s attitude about surgery—their mindset—has a profound impact on outcomes,” she says. “So I encourage my clients to gather information and connect with internal resources in a way that will truly serve their interests. Some people need a lot of information— from their surgeon, from nurses, and from others who are knowledgeable—so they can fully prepare themselves, mentally, physically, and emotionally, for the coming journey. If a client lacks confidence or a sense of comfort with a member of the surgical team, that’s an issue that needs to be addressed.

“My observation is that our emotions can and often do over-ride our physical presence. Ideally, our clients approach surgery with a confident sense that they are going to have a positive and healing outcome. Often, I will do extensive muscle therapy with clients in advance of coming surgery, to help prepare them both physically and emotionally.” And, says Ms. Holloway, there is the issue of diet. “I encourage my clients to abstain from heavy foods well before surgery.

Drugs are inevitably part of surgery, and they frequently induce constipation. Drugs affect people in different ways—there are few constants. So I encourage clients prior to surgery to monitor their nutrient, vitamin, and mineral intake, to strengthen the immune system to cope with the coming surgical event. I recommend this close attention to diet and supplementation for at least two weeks prior to surgery; longer is even better. On an individual basis, I might also recommend fasting for 24 hours prior to surgery, along with colon hydrotherapy to flush out the colon. How uncomfortable it is to be constipated and at the same time be dealing with a surgical incision!”

Post-Surgical Concerns

Hospital personnel typically want a patient to move their bowels before they are released, Ms. Holloway notes, and for some procedures—on the gall bladder or prostate, for example—“it’s difficult to accomplish this for some time after surgery. In those cases, it’s especially important to be cleaned out and properly nourished going into the procedure.

“Six to eight weeks after surgery, we urge our clients to come in for detoxification, so we can move the residual drugs from their system. We do that in a number of ways: through diet, detox supplements, colon hydrotherapy, lymphatic massage, and Ion cleanse. It’s essential to get these drugs, which served their purpose during surgery, out of the body as completely as possible, and to resume a healthy regimen of vitamins, supplements, good diet, and colon health.”

While she and her colleagues offer numerous healing therapies, Ms. Holloway is best known for her work in colon irrigation – or colon hydrotherapy—a safe, effective method of cleansing the large intestine by gently flushing with filtered water.

“We certainly do not diagnose illnesses in our practice, and I would never suggest that colon hydrotherapy helps cure colon cancer or any other disease,” she says, “but colonic therapy clearly offers significant preventive and ameliorative benefits for many health problems including cancer.”

Over a six-month period, Eleanor lost 70 pounds and more than half of the hair on her head. Chemical sensitivities offer a special challenge, notes Ms. Holloway. “If the causative agent is in the interstitial fluids of the body, the organs of the body, or in the colon, if it is not flushed out then healing cannot take place. It simply recalculates. If the colon is not eliminating on a regular, effective basis, the causing agent will simply recycle. And recycling the second time in the liver is more harmful than the first time.

“So even if bowels are moving on a daily basis, if a client has harmful chemicals or reactive medications or pesticides in their system, they need increased bowel movements to eliminate the source of the problem. Often, people take cleansing products, but that does not help flush out toxins from the other bodies and organ systems. Juicing is often helpful, but you cannot prescribe juicing over the phone. Each person is different, each health condition is different, and they each need to be evaluated and treated individually.

“This is, very often, a long-distance run and not a sprint. In my experience, it takes almost ten times as long to heal as it does to get sick. Understandably, everyone is looking for a quick fix, but quick fixes are not healings and we care about healing of mind, body, and spirit. We’re looking at the body as an inter related whole instead of treating a symptom. If we treat a symptom, we can get caught up in a vicious feedback loop: symptom, cause, effect. Our goal is not simply to relieve a symptom. Our goal is to promote true health and healing.”

She has taken her work as a colon hydrotherapist to the highest level, and was recently recognized as Colon Therapist of the Year by the International Association for Colon Hydrotherapy.

“Balance is a key issue in achieving health for the body,” she notes, “and over time I’ve become ever more aware of the link between the mind, the emotions, and our physical health, and the balancing act that goes on in those three arenas of life.”

Recently a middle-age woman on hormone replacement therapy under the guidance of her physician was referred to Ms. Holloway because of chronic constipation. Under her doctor’s direction, she had been taking laxatives for several months with limited success. “Actually,” says Ms. Holloway, “she was completely out of balance in all parts of her life: no bowel movements, poor eating habits, virtually no exercise, and emotional distress. And she was holding on, refusing to let go.

“So we began the colon hydrotherapy protocol, and our objective was to get her colon moving. In our second therapy session, she began to weep—and she loosened her grip on her personal demons. Years earlier, she revealed, she had been sexually abused. For years she harbored anger, resentment, and shame that she never expressed—not even to herself. But when she very haltingly began to talk about this, she did begin to let go—and her bowels started moving. I’m a great believer in the benefits of colon hydrotherapy, and I also respect and honor the non-physical dimensions of what is often happening in the human body. I referred this woman to a psychologist; we continue to work together, and today she would agree she is much healthier in all parts of her life.

And we become seriously out of balance.”

Health care professionals in increasing numbers are recognizing the health benefits of colon irrigation, Ms. Holloway says. “Dr. Robert Young, a respected microbiologist, has a lot to say about colon health in his book, The pH Miracle. He points out in his book that ‘the colon is very sensitive. Any injury, surgery, or other stress, including emotional upset and negative thinking, can change its friendly resident bacteria as well as its general ability to function smoothly and efficiently. Incomplete digestion here sets the stage for intestinal imbalance throughout the digestive tract, and for the colon to become a literal cesspool.’” Dr. Young’s work centers on the need to maintain pH balance in the body between acid and base, principally through the foods we choose to eat.

Ms. Holloway is a graduate of the Florida Institute of Natural Health-Florida School of Massage, in practice since 1981, and is licensed in Florida both as a colonic therapist and massage therapist—the only state, she notes, that requires licensing of colonic therapists “offering the most rigorous and highest level of training available in this specialty area.” She also holds the highest instructor-level membership in the International Association of Colon Therapists, and is certified by the National Board of Colon Hydrotherapy. Recently, that organization presented Ms. Holloway with its first Colon Therapist of the Year Award, recognizing three decades of outstanding service to the profession.

“In my training and my work,” she says, “I have come to deeply understand the strong beneficial relationship between massage and colonic therapy. The colon is simply a muscle, and as with any muscle, without proper exercise it becomes lazy and less active. When I work with a client during colon hydrotherapy, gentle massaging of the abdominal area, following the direction of the colon, is an important part of the process. The goal is detoxification— to move toxins out of the system. The colon needs to be actively involved to do that. Peristalsis refers to the muscle motion of the entire gastrointestinal tract that in rhythmic contractions and expansions propels matter from mouth to anus. Peristalsis needs high fluids, plenty of physical exercise, living food, and a harmonious emotional and mental state in order to function properly.”
