It is also the site for a condition called colitis, the medical term for inflammation of the colon.

The colon itself—medically, the large intestine—is about six feet long and two inches in diameter. It completes the digestive process by absorbing minerals, nutrients, and excess water from the digestive residue of the food we have eaten and discharging toxins and waste materials from the body.

Notes Ms. Holloway who, in 2009, was named Colon Therapist of the Year by the International Association of Colon Hydrotherapists, “We treat many clients who are undergoing treatment for cancer, and we see many clients who have been diagnosed with colitis.

“The classic symptoms of colitis are alternating constipation and diarrhea, with mucous and gaseous bloating—clear evidence that the gastrointestinal system is out of balance. Patients with colitis are more difficult to treat because the condition manifests with great variety.

“With virtually all of our clients, we look first and foremost at diet, but in truth, the dietary approach that works extremely well in one patient with colitis may simply not work well for another. Our goal is to reduce the inflammation, and then give support to the internal healing process.”

At the Alternative Health Center of Cary, she says, “We work with cancer clients on many levels and in many ways, depending on their needs. Some clients choose alternative approaches to dealing with cancer, such as adopting an organic diet, juicing, and colon cleansing. Others choose traditional therapies in tandem with colon therapy. Chemotherapy is a chemical with many side effects, because it introduces poison into the body. Colon hydrotherapy, when administered at the right time and in the right way during the cancer treatment process, can help cancer patients remove toxins that build up in the colon. Colon hydrotherapy is really a blessing for patients with cancer.

“Perhaps even more important, colon hydrotherapy is a simple, inexpensive, and remarkably effective way to prevent a host of disease conditions, including colitis and cancer. It is a safe, effective method of cleansing the colon of waste material by repeated, gentle flushing with water.

“When the colon is congested with stagnant wastes, toxins can back up into the system and pollute the inner environment. These poisons can re-enter and circulate in the bloodstream making us feel ill, tired, or weak. Impacted materials impair the colon’s ability to assimilate minerals and vitamins. And a buildup of material on the colon wall can inhibit muscular action causing sluggish bowel movements and constipation.”

During a colonic, she explains, toxic material is broken down and gently flushed away so it can no longer harm the body or inhibit assimilation and elimination. “Through massage, the skilled colon therapist is able to work loose and eliminate toxic waste. “A lot of damage”, – answers Denise Souza, a certified Colon Hydrotherapist, who holds a  Degree in Holistic Nutrition, – “Poor food choices lead to poor digestion , inadequate absorption, slow elimination and potentially constipation.”

Poor dietary choices and improper elimination have been linked to various symptoms like bloating and headaches through diabetes and heart disease.

“In an ideal situation, my clients would not come to me in crisis, but rather for prevention and maintenance. Many people do come for colonics as a preventative once a month or with the changes of the season (3-4 colonics sessions).”

What is Colon hydrotherapy? The large intestine is bathed with warm, filtered water; the pressure and temperature are regulated by a trained Colon Hydrotherapist. There are various systems, Denise prefers the closed system. The water inflow is separate from the out flow of waste and the waste is always contained with in the equipment.

As North Carolina does not license Colon Hydrotherapist yet it is important for consumer to check credentials. I-ACT, the International Association for Colon Hydrotherapy provides certification and requires various levels of training for therapists.

Denise Souza also coaches her clients in a proper diet. As without proper diet any detoxification process is absolutely pointless.

She starts her consultation with setting achievable goals and muscle testing for food tolerance.

“Not everybody is the same, but we all eat the same. The point of food tolerance testing is to find out if our body properly processes the food we eat? I sit with the client and find what works best, we put together a plan. Sometimes the changes are too overwhelming, so I set up the plan where transition is made gradually. We start with food groups or meals. And after the client sees results we make more changes to the diet”
